When I walked into Orschlen Farm store this afternoon, the sound of baby chickens filled the air. I immediately forgot what I had come for and followed the sound to the incubators in the back of the store. The labels under the baby chickens got my attention all right. Color on its way: 27 days to vernal equinox, but who’s counting?

This is the chard that I started from seed yesterday. I will nurture it carefully. From the seed packet: Thompson and Morgan offered Rainbow Swiss Chard through 1989, but then apparently lost the yellow and orange colors and dropped the mixture. After years of searching, Seed Savers Exchange (SSE) discovered that their friends at Digger's Garden Club in Australia have been offering the true Five Color Silverbeet for a decade. Absolutely spectacular range of colors throughout the entire season.
